Since my action word for 2015 is Simplify, it’s time to do some simplifying!
January seems to be THE month to start the bag-a-day challenge – similar to the 40 bags in 40 days Lenten challenge I participated in last year.
My challenge is easy: get rid of at least as much stuff as I brought into the house last year. So… I’ve decided to start by filling as many bags as I accumulated last year.
This is my bag o’bags collection.
Conveniently, my paper bag o’bags has 30 bags inside, which gives me 31 bags total, to correspond with the 31 days in January. The plan is to fill a bag a day on average (meaning I have permission to catch up on weekends if needed), as long as my total at the end of the month is 31.
Stuff that fills paper bags well:
- Paper to recycle or shred
- Books, CD’s, DVD’s
- Pantry food that needs to go
- Some toys
- Curtains, table linens
- Craft items
- Folded fabric yardage
Next to it is my plastic bag-o-bags. Same challenge applies! There are 39 bags inside + 1, so 40 bags total. 40 bags = 40 days. All the bags need to get filled up and mozy on out the door.
Stuff that fills plastic shopping bags well:
- Clothes, shoes, belts
- Bedding, towels, blankets, pillows
- Soft toys
- Pots and pans
- Funky shaped items that are too big for paper bags.
- Yarn, notions, trims, remnants
- Makeup, hair products, etc to toss
Last year I also did a lot of purging, but I’m far from finished. So, for the next 40 days, I’ll be filling up 70 bags of stuff. Seriously… that’s a lot of
crap (sorry Mom… stuff).
I’ll post a weekly update to show my progress (and to keep myself on track), and at the end I’m going to weigh it all and either gift, donate, toss, shred or recycle what’s inside. For the sake of not being disgusting, pantry items will not be staying for the final weigh in. And, I’ll consider my New-Year’s Eve fridge exorcism a bonus.
So… who’s with me??
Ready? Set… Go!
